Bone Broth

Bone Broth Crockpot

Bone Broth is credited with numerous benefits including aiding in recovery from a distance run, to improving the glow of your skin.

I’m not sure if it’s a miracle drug, but why not give it a try??!!

Plus if you add a slice of avocado to a nice little cup size serving and it’s a super yummy snack that is very low in calories. It’s also great for killing those salt cravings.

As intimidating as it may sound, making your own homemade bone broth is actually really easy.

The most complicated thing actually involves “getting” one of the ingredients. And by that I mean, roasting a chicken so you have the bones for your broth.

But even that process isn’t that challenging.

I recently roasted a chicken. The prep work is minimal and the bird is in the oven most of the time. Pretty easy!

After you have your chicken bones separated from the meat, you can either freeze the bones and make the broth later, or make it right away. I have tried both, and either is fine.

If you freeze the bones allow about 8 hours for them to defrost.

How to Make Bone Broth

In crockpot add:

  • 4 quarts of filtered water
  • Bones
  • ½ a bunch of celery cut in thirds
  • 3 carrots cut in thirds
  • A whole yellow onion cut in quarters

Then set the crockpot to low and let it go for 24 hours.

Once the broth is done stewing, put a large pot in your sink. Put a strainer over the pot, and pour the contents from the crockpot into the strainer/pot combo.

The strainer should catch everything you’ll discard including the veggies and the bones.

If you plan to make soup with the broth, it will keep in the fridge for up to three days. Or you can freeze it and use it later.

Bone Broth Individual Servings Frozen

If you want to have a serving of bone broth every day for the nutritional benefits, here is a little tip.

Pour the broth into a muffin tin for larger muffins. Freeze the tin with the broth. This way you have individual serves you can defrost as you need.

And don’t forget to add that slide of avocado, and maybe a little sea salt and pepper. It really enriches the flavor.

And that’s it! You’ve got your homemade bone broth for an amazing soup, or handy daily dose of healthy goodness!
