High-quality protein right to your door? Sign me up!
That’s exactly how I felt when I learned about Grass Roots Farmers’ Cooperative. This amazing farmers’ co-op delivers the highest quality meats directly to their customers.
All of Grass Roots products are free of GMOs, antibiotics, and growth hormones.
And while things like “grass-fed” and “pasture-raised” are buzz words right now, Grass Roots actually implements these methods and it makes a huge difference.
That’s because not all protein is the same.
For example, most beef you get at the store isn’t grass-fed, it’s grain-fed. It’s cheaper for the farmers, but it means lower nutritional value for you.
Same for poultry and pork. And if the animals aren’t eating well, that means the nutritional value of your meats goes way down.
And of course, you can taste the difference.
Think about how you feel after eating a steak with large chunks of fat and gristle? Or chicken that has been pumped with salt? If you are anything like me, you don’t feel great.
Now think about how satisfied you feel after you go to a top quality restaurant and have a lean cut of premium steak, or enjoy a high-quality piece of chicken?
Totally different, right?
But who can afford to go out to eat on a regular basis? Especially only at the best restaurants in town?
Fortunately, with Grass Roots Farmers’ Co-Op you don’t have to. In fact, you don’t even have to go to the grocery store!
They have monthly membership box that starts at $85 a month. When you sign up you can pick from four different options:
- Whole Farm- Includes a whole, pasture-raised chicken, 2 lbs of grass-fed ground beef, 1 package of linked, forest-raised pork sausages, and 2 lbs of forest-raised mild, ground pork sausage.
- Chicken & Pork- Includes a whole, pasture-raised chicken, 2 lbs of forest-raised ground pork sausage, and 2 packages of linked, forest-raised pork sausages.
- Chicken & Beef- Includes a whole, pasture-raised chicken and 4 lbs of grass-fed ground beef.
- Chicken- Includes a whole, pasture-raised chicken, 1 package of breasts (2 pieces), 1 package of drumsticks (4–6 pieces), 1 package of wings (5–6 pieces), and 1 package of thighs (4–5 pieces).
They also offer different bundles options. Everything from “The Basics” to “The Cream of the Crop”.
I tried out a membership box recently. I ordered it, and a few days later my meats arrived via FedEx in an EPS foam cooler.
So what is the Grass Roots difference?
Well first, they are farmer-owned and farmer-operated and every farmer is committed to the highest standards of agricultural sustainability.
And because they operate as a cooperative, their small farms are able to share resources and responsibilities, which makes processing, marketing, and distribution more efficient and cost-effective.
This means you get all the nutritional and environmental benefits of their high-quality meats, without the high cost.
I like Grass Roots because I’ve realized that a key nutritional component during my marathon training has been to add more high-quality protein into my diet.
Through increasing my protein to about 30% of my total macros for the day I’ve been able to lose ten pounds over the past five weeks (a safe, 2 pounds per week average). This has helped me get closer to ideal race weight.
Not only has it helped me lose weight, but I’ve found that I feel so much better on my runs, especially my long distance runs on the weekends.
And while you hear runners talk about carb loading, and carbs are important, protein is key too.
A large portion of protein, paired with some veggies and a little bread, has been my most successful dinner the night before a long-distance run.
An added bonus for us “new-to-cooking” folks, they have some great recipes on their website too!
So give Grass Roots a try. Spring is here and summer is right around the corner. Time to start firing up the BBQ more often and having high-quality meats on hand makes dinner planning super easy.
The only question left- do you want beef, chicken, or pork tonight??!!
