Did you get a love note today?
Well considering its Valentine’s Day (aka my favorite holiday), I’m sure the answer of ‘yes’ is disproportionately higher than if I asked this question on August 14th.
And maybe that’s why I love this holiday. I think any time people pause to say “I love you” just a little more, it’s a good thing.
After all, wouldn’t it be great if we all sprinkled a little Valentine’s Day love throughout the year?
For example, every day I write my husband a little love note in the morning. I’ve been doing it over a decade now.
It’s funny, when it comes up in conversation so many people are blown away.
Every day? How do you have time?? What if you got in a fight???
It’s a really simple thing to do, not nearly as complicated as people seem to think, and it means a lot. Here’s the run down:
First, it’s a short love note, people.
Not a novel. While my coffee is brewing in the Keurig, I write it out.
Second, I use a small note pad I keep in the kitchen.
The kind you get at the store for under a $1.00 to write out a grocery list. I keep it in a draw right by the Keurig. This way I always have the paper handy. Plus it’s the perfect size to write something meaningful, but short.
Third, there is always something to say.
A thank you for something he did last night. A note about something I’m excited to do with him over the weekend. or maybe juts a ‘good luck’ on something he has at work today. There is always something to say.
Forth, if we were in a disagreement the night before, I don’t need to fill up the whole note.
Sometimes (rarely, but it happens) all I write is “I hope you have a nice day and we get along better this evening.”
No matter how mad I may be, these words are always true.
And fifth, it makes a huge difference in my day.
When one of the first things you do in your day is pause to write about how much you love someone, it shifts your attitude towards gratitude. These daily notes set my day off right.
So no matter how you feel about February 14th, maybe take the spirit of this holiday and apply it to other days?
Whether you start writing a daily love note, sharing a nightly chocolate with your love, or take a moment to text your mom how much you love her, it will make a difference in your day.
The more you give, the more you get, and the rewards are worth the effort.
