Walking meditation

Walking meditation with dogs

Every morning- and many afternoons- I do a walking meditation while I take my two dogs for a short walk.

I started doing it when our newest addition, S’more, was adopted.

She’s an adorable terrier mix with lots of energy. Our dog trainer said walks weren’t recommended for her- they were mandatory.

So now, after my morning workout I come home, put their harnesses on, and take them out for a few laps.

It know it’s for their benefit, but it’s crazy how much it’s helped me, too.

It helps me slow down and just enjoy my mornings a little more. It’s only about 10 minutes, but it takes me away from my natural instinct to feel hurried and pressured as I start my day.

I’m also really luckily because I work just a few minutes from my house. Many days I can sneak away at lunch and take them on a short mid-day walk.

Stepping away from the office is really wonderful. I’ve definitely been in jobs where this wasn’t an option- but if you can, try and step away from your desk and get outside for a bit. Even if it’s only for 10 minutes. It’s crazy how much more productive you can be after you stop and smells the roses!

For me, being able to walk my dogs during a midday break from work is priceless. I’m able to put aside the projects, emails, and pressure for the perfect amount of time.

And seeing how happy they are on their walk helps me put everything in perspective.

All those emotions of having to get this done, or worrying about that, fade away pretty fast when you see how happy your dog is chasing a leaf.

Walking meditation

It’s pretty amazing the reality check your dog can bring you every day.

Many of us have heard the expression “Walk your dog every day, even if you don’t have one” and it really is great advice.

But if you do have a dog, try and put down the phone and your racing thoughts on your next walk with them. It’s pretty amazing how much you learn about pure joy from your little fur-baby!
