If you follow some of the more popular health-conscious accounts on social media, you’ve likely heard of Bulletproof Coffee.
Purveyors of these accounts have posted their Bulletproof Coffee recipes onto their blogs and walk you through their daily rituals on their Instagram or Snapchat stories.
So what is this thing? Why are all of these super health conscious people putting butter in their coffee?
And most importantly, are you missing out on something because you aren’t? My answer- sort of.
Here’s the deal. Bulletproof Coffee is the brainchild of Dave Asprey, the founder of Bulletproof 360, Inc. He is the creator of the Bulletproof diet and wrote a book of the same name.
He’s relatively new on the nutrition scene, having just founded his company, Bulletproof Nutrition, in 2014.
However, his company, thanks in large part to the popularity of this coffee, has taken off.
The promises of this morning drink are pretty strong.
Claims include lasting energy with no crash, accelerated calorie burning, and a mental boost.
So why isn’t everyone into this stuff?
Well, it sort of goes against common logic. Why? Because you’re adding 1-2 tablespoons of ghee (basically butter) and 1-2 tablespoons of Brain Octane Oil (kind of like coconut oil) to your coffee.
Sounds pretty counterintuitive for weight loss, right?
Yeah, I agree.
But I did give it a try and I actually liked it a lot. I have to say I felt way more alert, without the jitters. My morning flew by and I wasn’t hungry for my afternoon snack like normal, typically around 11:00.
After a few days, I wondered if I could get the same benefits, but cut back on the calories a bit.
I’m still a bit of calorie counter at heart (whenever I’ve lost weight, it’s always been thanks to eating fewer calories, not eliminating food groups).
I just couldn’t get behind all that fat in one drink.
So over the past weeks, I’ve slowly played with the original recipe to see what mix will give me the same great results (feeling full and alert) without all those calories.
I finally found the right balance for me.
Here is my recipe for a lower-calorie modified Bulletproof coffee
- 6 oz. of cold brew coffee (I like Chameleon)
- 2 oz. of Rebbl Maca
- ¾ cup of almond milk
- ½ tbsp. of grass-fed ghee (I like Fourth & Heart)
- ½ scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides
- 1 packet of Truvia
- 4 or 5 good shakes of cinnamon
Mix all together in a blender or Vitamix for about 2 minutes. Pour into cup and heat in the microwave to your desired temperature. And enjoy!
I love this recipe. I have it for breakfast every weekday. I’m not hungry like I was when I was having a smoothie that was heavy on the fruit.
I also love the extra energy it gives me without the crash.
So should you try it? Perhaps.
Maybe it will be your thing and maybe it won’t. One thing I’ve learned as I have experimented with more and more healthy options, one size doesn’t fit all. Anytime you hear someone say “you have to do this,” take it with a grain of salt.
All you really have to do is listen to your body! Enjoy!
