Power of Group Workouts

Power of group workouts

When it comes to working out, I’m a firm believer in the power of group workouts.

But, I didn’t use to be this way.

Until about two years ago, I was a solo runner.

I liked the idea of working out when I wanted to, and at my own pace.

However, everything changed when I found a local spin studio. Not only did I fall in love with the music they play in class, the challenge of the workout, and the positive feedback of the instructor- I also enjoyed all the energy working out with a group of people brought to my workout.

I found that I was pushing myself more. Not to compete with others, but because they were working so hard. It’s like having workout inspiration all around you.

For this reason, I’m now a complete group workout convert.

Since this discovery, I’ve been a faithful attendee of spin (my first love), but I’ve also found myself venturing out to other group classes. From Barre to Boot Camps, I really like the rush of trying to keep pace with others and pushing myself to do more.

Another bonus- I’ve made some new friends along the way.

As a fairly shy and introverted person, this is pretty big for me. But when I think about it, it makes sense that finding friends in these classes isn’t that weird.

When you’ve barely made it through a set of burpees, or wrapped up a Megareformer class without falling off the machine, it’s kind of natural to turn to someone beside you and congratulate each other on your accomplishments.

First, in a group workout, you are likely to be with other people who enjoy physical activity.

Skilled or not, everyone is there to improve their physical health- or at least fit into that cocktail dress.

Second, everyone is in it together.

If it’s tough, you aren’t coming home and complaining to your spouse about what you just went through. You have workout partner right there to commiserate with.

And third, it holds you accountable.

I won’t bail on an early workout time or skip class because I had a long day at work. I have a friend who is making herself go, so I feel compelled to do the same. I also feel compelled to sign up for the next class when she texts me asking if I’m doing it again.

If you’re fairly new to group workouts, yeah for you! Wait until you start shopping the options! There are so many wonderful classes out there.

And if you are looking for a little more, try out a studio, instead of class at the gym.

Start going to studios- and by this I mean a place that specializes in just a few kinds of workouts, not an open gym format. Use your favorite search tool and find a boutique yoga or spin studio, because you are likely to find a little more attention to your specific workout needs than you might find at a regular gym.

But you’ll also find out that these places are usually a little more pricey, which is another reason you should get more attention than a drop in class at 24 Hour Fitness.

If you try out a studio and it doesn’t fit your personality or workout style, no worries!

There are so many options out there. Many studios offer a discount for new students, so give a few a try.

Not sure you want to commit to any one type of class or studio? Try ClassPass for a month. I’m a Class Passer and I love it. For about $80 I can try tons of local studios in my area. It’s been a great way to try out new things and challenge myself more and more.

So, it’s not that I’m retiring my running shoes by any means.

But I have to admit, getting out of bed early in the morning knowing my friend is doing the same makes it much easier. And catching up while burning calories is a complete bonus!
