ClassPass Sacramento Users: Since this post, ClassPass has changed its system again. For a more recent review of the ClassPass options please see my New ClassPass System Gets an A+ post.
Yesterday I took the plunge and signed up for ClassPass.
For those not familiar with ClassPass, here is quick rundown.
The price differs by the city you live in (they are in about 30 cities now). I live in Sacramento and the price is $79 a month for the unlimited plan.
With this pass, you have access to a number of boutique fitness studios and gyms in the area that have partnered with ClassPass. It became available in Sacramento in March of 2015, with a limited number of options. But now that it’s been around for about a year and a half, it has way more options than it did when it first started.
Basically, all those cute yoga and Pilates studios you’ve always wanted to go try are now available via your unlimited membership.
And it’s not just yoga and Pilates studios- there are boot camps and high-performance strength and conditioning classes too. There are even smaller ‘open’ gyms (where you can access many types of basic workout machines), so if you just want to run on a different treadmill throughout the week, you can do that now, too.
The ClassPass is made for people that have always wondered if they could make it through a Bikram class and in the same week wondered if they could kill it in boot camp. Now you can try all of the many different types of workout and fitness classes without the commitment.
The only catch- don’t fall too in love with the new studio you discovered.
You can only go to each studio 4 times over the course of the month. So this isn’t a workaround for a higher monthly fee at the local Pilates studio that you would just love to join. But if you are okay with adding new things to your fitness rotation, you’ll do just fine.
For me, this whole thing is a complete stretch.
Every morning I take a spin class, maybe do a 10 minute Tone It Up strengthening video, and I’m done. I like my routine and the thought of changing up one of my most sacred things, my workouts, is a bit nerve-racking.
But I have a fun and carefree friend who talked me into giving ClassPass a shot. When she told me I could get $20 off the first month and she would get $20 for referring me, I was in. For my friend, I could suck it up.
Beyond that, I know I need to change it up. Cross training has never been my strong suit, but I’ve read enough articles about the value of “confusing” your body with a new workout that I believe there is something to this.
When I logged onto the site and saw all the studios now available in the Sacramento region, I was really impressed.
When I looked into this in the Spring of 2015, the pickings were slim. Now they have plenty of the big names I’ve heard around town, including Padme Yoga Center and Fitness Rangers– which offers everything from boot camp (yep, that will be on Monday morning) to boxing.
So for the next month, I plan on trying a number of different classes and studios. Will I change my fitness personality from cardio lover to calm yogi? I doubt it. But hopefully I’ll be a little stronger and flexible come September.
