I’ve been blessed to visit Washington D.C. a few times over the years. I love the city because I find the energy so intriguing. Maybe it’s because I worked on a Congressional campaign many years ago – or because I binge watch House of Cards – whatever it is, I love spending time in D.C. And I have to say, the people watching is top notch.
If you’re looking for some eating ideas, I did another separate post about restaurants I love. But when I wasn’t eating, I saw did a lot of great things over a recent weekend trip.
Here a few things that are free things to do in dc this weekend!
Explore the National Mall by Foot or Bike
For me, the best way to get the lay of the land when traveling is to go on distance runs in the morning. It’s not always possible, but if it’s safe and accessible, a run outside always beats the basic hotel gym.
In D.C., you can also rent a bike from Capital Bikeshare. Places to rent and return are all over the town, so it’s super easy. And the first 30 minutes are free, though they do require you to provide a credit card (in case you decide not to return the bike). Everything is automatic and super straightforward, like using one of the newer parking meters that take cards.
Either way, I highly recommend making your way around the National Mall the first or second day you are in town. You can check out where all the different museums are and take in the amazing architecture.
It’s truly beautiful, and you’ll get in some of your daily cardio without even realizing it.
I’d recommend budgeting a full day just to walk around and take it all in. There is a lot to see, and the National Mall is a lot bigger than you think. Distances in Washington D.C. have a way of being deceiving.
Deciding which museums you want to visit and how much time you want to spend in each one can be the hardest part, especially if your time in the city is limited.
What’s great is all the Smithsonian Museums are free, so you can pop in and out as you’d like. But there can be lines to get in due to security checks, so make sure you budget extra time for the more popular museums.
Visit the National Zoo
The National Zoo is a must-see for me every time I visit. It is also run by the Smithsonian, so admission is free, but this zoo blows my mind.
For starters, they have pandas! On my recent visit, they weren’t out, but I’ve seen them before and they are seriously amazing. And if you don’t have a trip planned to D.C. anytime soon, you can always check out the Panda Cam!
Even sans pandas, the Zoo is crazy cool. Lions, monkeys, elephants – they have it all.
When we go to D.C., we often stay at the Mayflower Hotel near the DuPont Circle area, so it is easy to take the Metro or a cab to the Zoo. Check it out, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
Enjoy the Farmers’ Market
Something that might not be in your basic guide to the city, but is really cool and not to be missed, is the farmers’ market in DuPont Circle. It may seem random to visit a farmers’ market while on vacation, but this one has more than just fresh fruit. From pastries to pork to produce, there are many varieties and choices, and it’s so much fun to check out.
These are just a few highlights, but there is so much more. From the beauty of Georgetown to the emotional experience of Arlington National Cemetery, you can easily spend a week exploring the area and not see or visit everything. If you like history, food or just exploring a town with the best museums that are FREE, add it to your list of places to visit!
